Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT)
For more than 60 years, India’s oldest business school XLRI (Xavier Labor Relations Institute) aka Xavier School of Management has been conducting XAT at all India level to select the most appropriate students for management education, on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). Other than testing skills in Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Verbal & Logical Ability, XAT also asks questions from Decision Making and General knowledge. In this way, the XAT Paper consists of four sections while in CAT Paper there are three sections.
A total of 100 Questions would be given to be solved in 3 hours of time. The initial 165 minutes are to attempt the first three sections. After completing the first three sections, the candidates can move to the General Knowledge Section and attempt the questions in the given 15 minutes.

XAT Syllabus
Here is the section-wise syllabus for XAT. Section 1: Verbal and Logical Ability In this section questions about Reading Comprehension, Verbal Ability, and Logical Reasoning are asked. The topics which are generally tested in this section are:
- Vocabulary, Analogy
- Paragraph Jumbles, Paragraph Completion
- Critical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning
- Statements-Assumptions
Section 2: Decision Making
This is the additional section tested in XAT only. It consists of 7 to 8 passages which have 2-3 questions each. There is no particular preparation or syllabus for this section as it is based on the clarity of thought of the candidate. The set of questions also ensures that the answers that the candidate gives do not contradict each other.
This section is a combination of Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation Questions. The Data Interpretation sets are usually followed by 3-4 questions. The syllabus for Quantitative Ability is the same as in CAT. Over the years
XAT has asked questions from a wide variety of topics in Quantitative Ability. Questions are often seen from Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Probability, and Co-ordinate Geometry. To ace your preparation for the XAT paper
you are advised not to leave any topic from the list mentioned below.

- Equations, Percentage - Profit - Loss, Ratio -Proportions, Mixtures, Simple and Compound Interests
- Number Systems
- Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometric Ratios
- Algebra, Surds and Logarithms
- Permutations -Combinations, Probability
- Venn Diagrams
- Tables, Pie Charts and Line Charts
- Bar Diagrams
The General Knowledge section of the XAT has no specific syllabus and it covers a wide range of topics from current affairs to static GK. MARKING SCHEME:
- Marks awarded for every correct answer: +1 mark
- Negative marks are awarded for every incorrect answer: -0.25 marks
- Negative marks are awarded for every un-attempted question after 8 un-attempted questions: -0.10 mark
- No negative marking for Part 2: GK.
